Counselor-in-Training (CIT) Job Description

What is STEPS?

The Basic STEPS camp program at the University of St. Thomas is a one-week, tuition-free, applied science experience for girls entering the 7th grade. In six one-week basic camps, 240 girls (40 each week) live and study on campus to get a firsthand taste of college life. The girls participate in a variety of classes, workshops and activities to gain an understanding of basic principles of engineering processes through a fun, hands-on experience with high-tech equipment in a college setting.
      • 6 sessions of Basic STEPS will be held from June 27 – August 5, 2010

The Advanced STEPS camp is a one-week, tuition-free, experience for girls entering 9th grade.
The focus is to build upon the foundation offered in the Basic STEPS camp that girls experienced two years earlier. In addition, focus is placed on college and career exploration and guidance. Only campers who completed a Basic STEPS program are eligible to apply for Advanced STEPS.
      • 1 session of Advanced STEPS will be held from June 20 – June 24, 2010

Counselor-in-Training (CIT) Job Description

A STEPS CIT has many duties working with 7th grade girls from diverse backgrounds.  First and foremost, a STEPS CIT must be highly interested in working with middle school girls and a college age counseling staff. The job entails everything from attending classes with campers, assisting with counselor run activities, giving the counselors breaks and stepping in as a counselor, making sure campers are safe and getting from class to class without losing momentum.  Being a STEPS CIT is a strenuous job, which requires a mature individual with patience, high energy, and a desire to design activities on the go.  A STEPS CIT will live on-campus, in the dorms, with the campers for the CIT’s two weeks at camp. Also, each CIT will attend a week long, daytime training from Monday, June 14 – Friday, June 18. There are 3 CIT sessions throughout the summer.  They are all two week periods with Friday and Saturday off in between the two weeks.  The sessions are as follows - CIT 1 – June 27 – July 10; CIT 2 – July 11 – July 22; or CIT 3 July 25 – August 5.  This job is incredibly rewarding for the individual who wants to participate in engineering activities, while changing the lives of many girls.  No previous knowledge of science and technology are required, but a desire to explore and learn is a must!     

Responsibilities include, but are not limited to -

• Creating a welcoming, positive camp atmosphere for all campers and being a responsible mentor to 10 girls throughout the two week session
• Assisting in facilitation of predesigned camp activities
• Assisting in execution of nightly activities
• Participating in the team effort of being part of the STEPS counseling team
• Being patient, flexible, willing to have fun while working with the camp’s diverse population

Qualifications


• Be self-motivated and enjoy working with middle school aged girls
• CIT must have completed the 9th grade.  This is an all-girls overnight camp so only female applicants will be considered

• Free room and board for duration of CIT session
• Free board during training

Time Commitment

• Training is Monday, June 14 – Friday, June 18
• CIT’s only attend one session
• CIT 1 – Thursday, June 27 – Sunday, July 10
• CIT 2 – Thursday, July 11 – Sunday, July 22
• CIT 3 – Thursday, July 25 – Sunday, August 5
