The Grad Programs in the School of Engineering at St. Thomas have reported dramatic increases in summer and fall enrollments. Graduate credits are up 21% over the 2008-09 academic year. “We continue to offer a very high value degree plan through our evening graduate programs. More than 300 students from over 100 different companies in the metro area are engaged in our Engineering and Tech Management Masters programs.” said Don Weinkauf, Dean of Engineering. “Imagine the educational experience of discussing how problems are solved with so many different company perspectives represented in the classroom. Clearly it’s becoming an attractive aspect to our students.”
While, Manufacturing Engineering and Tech Management remain the largest programs, the most significant growth is in the new Regulatory Science and Mechanical Engineering masters tracks. The Regulatory Science program grew from the long-standing certificate program in Medical Device Development. For more than a decade, the School of Engineering had been offering the Medical Device track with a focus on bringing medical devices from design thru regulatory to manufacturing. The industrial advisory committee together with the faculty retooled the program to reflect current medical device industry Regulatory Affairs needs.
The new Masters program in Mechanical Engineering supports a 5-year track for continuing students, as well as a degree track for non-traditional students continuing their education while working in the Twin Cities vibrant industrial community. The program centers on a core of advanced courses offered by the Engineering faculty from both the Electrical and Mechanical Engineering programs.
“Our faculty have PhD’s from the top engineering schools in the country. There is no compromise in Engineering education and research at St Thomas. It’s just a different atmosphere and different focus. You’ll see that in the courses, you’ll see that in the research, and you’ll see that in the students which emerge from this program,” adds Weinkauf.
The School of Engineering has offered graduate tracks in Engineering since 1986. With nearly 600 alumni from the graduate program, St Thomas has made a significant impact on the manufacturing and engineering community in the Twin Cities region over the last two decades. Master's degrees are currently offered in Technology Management, Systems Engineering, Manufacturing Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, and Regulatory Science. Additionally, the School delivers a range of Certificate Programs including a popular Medical Device Development track.
