All signs at the School of Engineering appear to be leading to a Masters degree program in Mechanical Engineering. The Curriculum Committee is in the final stages of developing the proposal for consideration by the University.
“We've listened to our Board, our faculty, our students, and all agree that this will be a fantastic area of growth for the School of Engineering,” says Don Weinkauf, Dean of Engineering. The proposed program will support research venues for faculty, a 5-year track for continuing students currently enrolled, as well as a degree track for non-traditional students continuing their education while working in the Twin Cities vibrant industrial community. The program will center on a core of advanced courses offered by the Engineering faculty from both the Electrical and Mechanical Engineering programs.
“Our faculty have PhD’s from the top engineering schools in the country. There is no compromise in Engineering education and research at St Thomas. It’s just a different
atmosphere and different focus. You’ll see that in the courses, you’ll see that in the research, and you’ll see that in the students which emerge from this program,” adds Weinkauf.
If approved, the program would officially start Fall 2009. Several of the courses in the degree plan have been offered for many years and will be offered in Spring 2008.
The School of Engineering has offered graduate tracks in Engineering since 1986. With nearly 600 alumni from the graduate program, St Thomas has made a significant impact on the manufacturing and engineering community in the Twin Cities region over the last two decades. Master's degrees are currently offered in Technology Management, Systems Engineering, and Manufacturing Systems. Additionally, the School delivers a range of Certificate Programs including a popular Medical Device Development track.
