The University of St. Thomas

For Industry

Information for Industry

Welcome to the University of St. Thomas School of Engineering

Our industry-leading programs began in 1986 with a focus on manufacturing systems engineering, and have expanded to the broader areas of engineering leadership, operations and technology strategy. In July 2004 the undergraduate and graduate programs combined to form the current school.

Our students blend technology with leadership and management skills, giving them the experience to advance in their careers. Our strong partnerships within the business community keep us current with industry trends and bring practical applications to the educational experience. Industry-experienced faculty and applied learning practices enhance the value of the learning and the lives of the learners.

Career Intern Process

The School of Engineering was started with a strong connection to industry. The objective is to supply ready engineers to fill industry requirements. Our successful track record has helped the program grow tremendously in the last few years. One area that needs to mature with this growth is finding the means for companies and students to connect for jobs. Interviews with students, industry and St. Thomas staff were conducted during fall semester to determine what works and what is still needed. Resources to facilitate the process are being tuned and added to the new engineering website. Partnering with the University’s Career Development Center, several interesting initiatives are already underway. The early activities have included modification of the website, creating a checklist for companies to develop a job description, and constructing a “how to” piece for students seeking internships. Expect to begin seeing the results of our efforts soon.  If you have questions or needs you want to express about this process, please contact Perry Parendo at pkparendo@stthomas.edu.

A few of the existing St. Thomas offerings for connection with industry include: career development center for on campus interviewing, interview preparation and job search assistance, a job posting and notification system, co-op program, Engineer of the Future fall event, Sr. Design Clinic, Spring Design Show, grants and industrial research, company on-campus presentations and on-site tours. The goal is to make these fit together seamlessly so students and industry can use them in an easy and timely manner.

The new co-op program is generating interest with various companies. It is a continuous “semester and a summer” program for credit. The semester can either be spring or fall. For more information, contact John Abraham directly at jpabraham@stthomas.edu.

Our students are connecting with industry regularly and company feedback from interviews has been positive. One company stated “I am so impressed with your students’ communication skills! “.  We can also boast that all of this year’s seniors have had some internship experience prior to graduation. Last years graduating class accepted jobs at organizations such as Caterpillar Paving Products, Delphi Automotive, Lake Region Manufacturing, Lockheed Martin, Remmele Engineering, Seagate Technology and the United States Air Force. Based on all of this activity, the department is positioned for continued success.
