Edwin C. Jones, Jr. was born in West Virginia and received his BSEE from West Virginia University in 1955, his Diploma of the Imperial College (DIC) from the University of London in 1956, and his PhD in Electrical Engineering from the University of Illinois in 1962. He served on the faculty at the University of Illinois from 1962 until 1966, when he joined Iowa State University as an Assistant Professor. He was promoted to Professor in 1972, and named a University Professor in 1995. He served as Director of Engineering Distance Education from 1986 until 2000, and Associate Chair of Electrical and Computer Engineering from 1997 until 2001. He retired in 2001 as a University Professor Emeritus. He has industrial service with General Electric, Westinghouse, and the U S Army. He is a Fellow of IEEE (citation: for contributions to engineering education), AAAS, ASEE, and ABET. He was given the 2001 Linton E. Grinter Distinguished Service Award by ABET.
Professor Jones was appointed an Adjunct Professor at the University of St Thomas in January 2006 to help with develop and administer the Systems Engineering program. He had related activities at Iowa State University .
Professor Jones lives in Oak Park Heights with his wife Ruth. Their three "adult children" and four grandchildren all live in the Twin Cities area. He enjoys photography, travel, and collects slide rules.
