The certificate program focuses on developing cross-cultural exchanges and community-based leadership skills for students who are interested in becoming agents of change in their organizations as well as contributing to the advancement of Third World countries.
The program’s primary mission is to expose graduate students to issues of leadership, democratization, and Third World development through course curriculum, intercultural exchanges and on-campus leadership forums with national and international leaders, including former heads of states.
Graduate students will obtain a certificate in international leadership in 12-18 months by completing four courses broken into three core courses (9 credits), and one collateral course (3 credits). Students also will attend one annual presidential leadership forum and participate in intercultural exchanges.
EDLD 891 Biography and Leadership (3 credits)
EDLD XXX International Development (3 credits)
EDLD XXX Leadership in International Contexts, including fieldwork trip (3 credits): Capstone Course
The Presidential Leadership Forum hosts national leaders and international heads of states, including former democratically elected African leaders. The forum is designed for our students and faculty to benefit from their insights and leadership experience. All students registered for one of the certificate program courses offered during spring semester are required to attend the forum.
The program includes intercultural exchanges, a two-week travel experience to Third World countries. The trip will offer the unique opportunity of understanding Africa’s leadership and future development through the eyes of those who have been direct agents of change. Should a student not be able to make the trip, s/he will be able to complete alternative coursework with the instructor’s approval.
Graduate students will gain new insights into globalization issues and corresponding leadership challenges while enhancing their leadership skills and cultural competencies. This is especially important at a time when employers are looking for culturally literate leaders.
Upon successful completion, the International Leadership Certificate will be reflected on the student leader’s academic transcript and can help fulfill master’s degree requirements, particularly in the M.A. in Public Policy and Leadership program. Certificate graduates will be honored at a formal dinner with distinguished guests, at which time they will receive a framed certificate.
Finally, we are proud of the multifaceted support we receive from the Leadership, Policy and Administration Department, Dean Sue Hubert and our strong advisory board, including former U.S. Senator Dave Durenberger, Megan Doyle (founder and CEO of Hopes for the City), Ward Brehm (chairman of African Development Foundation), Ben Kojo Taylor (CEO of Micro-clinics) and Father Dennis Dease, UST president.
