Denver Broncos' Ryan Harris speaks to UST NYSP about academics

Ryan Harris, third-round draft pick of the Denver Broncos and previous four year starter for the Notre Dame Fighting Irish visited the University of St. Thomas National Youth Sports Program (NYSP), on Thursday, June 28.  The St. Paul native spoke with 100 participants about the importance of academics at the free camp providing children ages 10-16 with academics and athletics, nutritious meals, and exposure to a college campus.

Having found success on the football field and in the classroom with a 3.1 GPA and degrees in political science and economics, Harris encouraged the kids to “pay attention to the academic portion [of the camp], that’s what will get you something.” Explaining the value of education, he said, “Everything you do is easier the longer you stay in school.”

NYSP helps kids increase self esteem, develop leadership and problem solving skills, and make decisions to reach beyond urban challenges creating greater opportunities. Harris asked “How many of you want to have something nobody can take from you? Go to college, get a degree. Once you know how to do something, nobody can take that away.” He added to the camp’s purpose showing kids their goals are achievable through hard work and participation in class.

Harris ended his motivational presentation asking “How many of you want to go to college?”  Eagerly, every kid raised their hand.
