The Why and How of Differentiation

Differentiation in the classroom is one of the biggest challenges facing teachers and administrators today. How can we meet the needs of the different kinds of learners in our classrooms? Familiarize yourself with strategies that can be used to present information to all students in your classroom in a way that meets their individual learning needs.

At this free event, University of St. Thomas Curriculum and Instruction Department Chair Dr. Karen Westberg will present an introduction to differentiation and provide strategies you can use in the classroom. Faculty member Dr. Candace Chou will discuss methods for incorporating technology into your differentiated classroom.

Before you can implement differentiation strategies in your classroom, you must first understand what differentiation is. In this session, Curriculum and Instruction Department Chair Dr. Karen Westberg will explain what differentiation is and what it is not. You will take away strategies and resources you can use to bring differentiated instruction into your own classroom and school.

Technology as a Tool for Implementing Differentiation

Technology offers many effective ways to provide differentiated instruction. Learn how to use technology in your differentiated classroom as faculty member Dr. Candace Chou shows examples of technology-assisted differentiated instruction in K-12 classrooms.

Karen Westberg, Ph.D. is an acclaimed professor of gifted and talented education in Minnesota. As department chair of the Department of Curriculum and Instruction, her other areas of interest include educational psychology and research and evaluation.

   Candace Chou, is a frequent international presenter on the use of technology in classrooms. She has extensive knowledge in the areas of electronic portfolio design and research, instructional design, technology integration and online learning environment design. Chou is a faculty member in the Department of Curriculum and Instruction at the University of St. Thomas.
