Linking Methods and Theory: Exploring the Connections

Understanding Contemporary College Students:
Theoretical and Methodological Quandaries and Possibilities

Presented by Dr. Marcia Baxter Magolda and Dr. Peter Magolda, this year's plenary keynote presentation will explore ways to link research methods and the use of theory to gain a more complex understanding of students and student learning. Highlighting from a evelopmental perspective that looks at meaning-making, as well as an anthorpological/ cultural studies perspective, the keynote speakers will illustrate how two distinct qualitative data collection methods work to inform our understanding of the research.

Dr. Marcia Baxter Magolda, using her 22-year longitudinal study as a context, will consider assets and liabilities associated with her evolving theoretical interpretations and research methods. She will use longitudinal data to illustrate these issues and engage the audience in reacting to these issues.

Dr. Peter Magolda, using his most recent ethnographic study of an evangelical collegiate organization, will highlight theoretical and methodological challenges associated with the study of contemporary college student subcultures.
