The 15th  Annual Hubbs Children's Literature Conference, Saturday, February 24, 2007 is an annual event for teachers, parents, students, librarians and anyone interested in quality children's literature. Continuing education credits are available.

The 2007 event features accomplished children's book authors Nancy Carlson and Jane Resh Thomas, as well as specific breakout sessions focusing on children's literacy topics.

Life-long Minnesotan Nancy Carlson is an accomplished children's book author and illustrator with over 50 books published.  She is also a winner of the Children's Choice Award from the International Reading Association and Children's Book Council. Recently published books of the author include, Get Up and Go, and First Grade Here I come!

Jane Resh Thomas is the 2006 Minnesota Book Award winner for Counterfeit Princess.  Besides being the author or more than 15 books for children, she has guided children's literature enthusiasts for 25 years by reviewing children's books for the Minneapolis Star Tribune

The Hubbs Children's Literature Conference will be held in the O'Shaughnessy Educational Center on the University of St. Thomas campus in St. Paul.

Participants sign up for breakout sessions during conference check-in. Please have a first and second choice ready. Breakout sessions are limited to 25 participants.

All breakout sessions, including those conducted by the keynote speakers, will be offered at both 1 and 2 p.m.

Opening the Door for Discussion of Death and Dying through Children's Literature

Carol McCormick, author

Professional Storyteller Carol McCormick will talk about her new children's picture book, A Bridge for Grandma. The book is meant to open the door for discussion of death, dying, and near-death experiences.

The Picture Book Journey

Kelly Dupre, artist, author and educator

Join Kelly Dupre, published Author and illustrator, as she weaves slides, stories, music, and show and tell items such as written book materials,  artifacts, original art, and art tools, through the fascinating journey of writing and illustrating picture books set in different places and cultures. Travel from the Arctic through her book "The Raven's Gift; A True Story From Greenland" and then to east Africa by way of "The Lion's Share" all while learning the stories behind the stories of picture books.

The Who, What, When, Where, Why, and How of the Kerlan Collection

Marcia Reardon
The Kerlan Collection at the University of Minnesota is one of the world's great children's literature research collections. The Kerlan Collection presently contains more than 100,000 children's books as well as original manuscripts, artwork, galleys, and color proofs for more than 16,000 children's books.  Find out what is going on at this international treasure right in our own backyard.
