Student Involvement and South Campus Apartments/Houses

 

General Information

The Department of Campus & Residence Life is committed to mentoring, supporting and encouraging the professional development of students within the Master of Arts, Leadership in Student Affairs program at the University of St. Thomas.  This Graduate Student Employee (GSE) position has dual responsibilities and reporting structures; GSE of Student Involvement reporting to the Associate Director of Campus Life; GSE of South Campus Apartments/Houses reporting to the South Campus Area Director of Residence Life.  The position is available during the Fall, January Term and Spring semesters of the academic year.

 

This position offers a unique opportunity for a graduate student to gain experience in both a Campus Life and Residence Life Office.  Working and reporting to supervisors in these two areas will provide a graduate student exposure to multiple areas of Student Affairs, working with diverse populations of students, developing collegial/networking experiences with professional staff members, and developing diverse skill sets.  

 

Eligibility

Qualifications of viable candidates include present enrollment in the Master of Arts, Leadership in Student Affairs program at the University of St. Thomas, maintaining a full academic load in the program, and remaining in good academic standing throughout the entirety of the graduate student employment.

 

Remuneration and Contract Dates

  • Remuneration for the Campus Life position is $10,000 AND for the Residence Life position is a single apartment (2171 Grand Avenue) valued at $6,940, $2500 flex dollars and $2,000 per semester, totaling $23,440
  • The Contract runs from August 1, 2007 through May 31, 2008 and 20 hours per week are dedicated to Campus Life and 10 hours per week to Residence Life responsibilities (30 hours per week total).

 

Student Involvement Graduate Student Employee (Campus Life)

 

Leadership and Programming

  • Work as a member of the Department of Campus & Residence Life team on various leadership initiatives and programming
  • Serve on the Student Leadership Selection committee
  • Serve on the annual recognition ceremony committee “The Spirit of St. Thomas”

 

Spirit Initiatives Programming

  • Work with the residence halls, the weekend programming theme floors, Residence Hall Association (RHA), St. Thomas Activities and Recreation programming board (STAR), All College Council (ACC), Student Alumni Council (SAC), and Student Athletic Advisory Committee (SAAC) to implement spirit programs at various athletic contests (pre-game, halftime, post-game) 
  • Work with students to create a plan for increasing student attendance and involvement at athletic contests 
  • Be responsible for organizing activities around “Tommie Tuesday’s,” which is a day on campus dedicated to spirited involvement.

 

The Spirit Program

  • Assist in the administration/advisement of the Pep Band, Cheer Team, Dance Team and Mascot
  • Manage the schedule of appearances for the Spirit Program at various athletic contests and school functions.

 


 

South Campus Apartments/Houses Graduate Student Employee (Residence Life)

 

Supervision

  • Train, supervise and evaluate the work of two undergraduate Apartment Coordinators (ACs) in the Child Development Center (CDC) Student Residence and Sophomore House
  • Together with the other South Campus Graduate Student Employee have a weekly one-hour meeting with the four ACs (CDC, Transfer Houses, Sophomore House) to discuss needs and concerns, community development and programming of their residents
  • Have bi-weekly developmental meetings with the ACs in the CDC (1) and Sophomore House (1)

 

Community Development

  • Together with the other GSE facilitate an informational meeting/community gathering at the beginning, mid and end of the year for the Grand Avenue Apartments residents, the residents of the Child Development Center Student Residence and the residents of the three Houses
  • Strive to develop a rapport with residents that is characterized by regular personal contact
  • Communicate pertinent information to residents and act as a liaison between the Office of Residence Life, the University administration, and apartment/house residents
  • Have working knowledge of the campus and community support services available to the residents

 

Community Safety and Resident Assistance

  • Maintain awareness of any physical, behavioral, or psychological changes that may occur in residents
  • Have working knowledge of the proper procedures for responding to behavioral, medical, psychological and environmental emergencies
  • Confront and/or report to UST Public Safety persons who violate University and/or Residence Life policies
  • Post weekly office hours (2 hours a week) and be available in apartment for residents  
  • Serve as a liaison between Grand Avenue Apartments, Child Development Center Student Residence, Sophomore House and Public Safety Officers

 

Administrative Duties

  • Complete weekly reports as requested by supervisor
  • Responsible for opening and closing of the apartments and houses including coordinating all move-in/out processes
  • Communicate special notices/information from Residence Life to the residents
  • Conduct one apartment health and safety inspection during January and complete follow-up inspections as needed
  • Walk through Grand Avenue Apartment buildings regularly to assess facility needs, request work orders and maintenance concerns to Physical Plant via an online system and follow up with the Office of Residence Life as needed

 

Training and Development

  • Be present for and actively participate with selected Residence Life training sessions and events
  • Attend weekly residence life staff meetings on Thursdays from 9-11 a.m.
  • Attend bi/tri-weekly Campus & Residence Life Tuesday meetings from 10-11 a.m.
  • Attend bi-weekly contact meetings with area supervisor
