Department Description:  Academic Advising (AA) and the Academic Skills Office (ASO) share the responsibility of creating and supporting all stakeholders in the Augsburg educational community.  This includes students, faculty and staff. Our departments assist students, staff and faculty in the delivery and engagement of their educational experience.  We strive to make the educational opportunities more accessible and manageable. The mission statements for our departments are as follows:

Academic Advising (AA): The mission of Academic Advising at Augsburg College is to educate students, faculty and staff on the Augsburg curriculum and college policies, and to support students in the achievement of their educational and vocational goals.

 

AA is responsible for advising and registering all new traditional Day and non-traditional adult undergraduate students (Augsburg for Adults).  We also work with currently enrolled students that have questions regarding the Core Curriculum (Gen Ed).

 

AA is responsible for several administrative processes such as the administration of all Entry Level Skills Assessments, updating major checklists, various events such as Orientation and work with the academic departments and other academic and student support staff on the delivery of the undergraduate curriculum.

Academic Skills Office (ASO): The mission of the Academic Skills Office at Augsburg College is to empower students by providing the tools and support to achieve academic success.

 

ASO runs several programs to enhance the academic performance/progress of all undergraduate students including:  Tutoring and Supplemental Instruction, Academic Skills Training for Athletes, assessment and interpretation of study skills survey for all first year students, etc.

 

ASO also works with specific students populations that are “at risk” academically such as those admitted to the College under the condition that they work with a skills coach and those that are placed on academic probation (GPA<2.0). 

 

Position Description

 

Job responsibilities:  Interns go through both one-on-one training and shadow advisors and coaches to learn how to function in each of these roles.  The specific tasks will include:  intake advising for new students, advising returning students, serving as an academic skills coach to under-prepared students, general advising and coaching at our student service center, internal projects and other duties as assigned. 

 

 Interns will have the opportunity to work one-on-one with students, to work in small and large groups and to give presentations.  Interns will also work with other departments in order to learn about and connect with staff and faculty from across the College and may be asked to participate in group presentations.

 

We have offered students two options for working with us.  One option is the summer and fall term (May – December with limited breaks).  Or, the academic year Fall and Spring term with time off over winter and spring break (August 1 – end of April, with a month off around Xmas and a week in the spring).

 

Start Date:  May 1 or August 1, 2008

 

Length of Appointment:  May to December or August to May (with time off in Dec/Jan and March)

Salary:  None at this time.
