Requirements Based on Your Situation

Students holding a teaching license - Eligibility for K-12 Principal Licensure requires:

  • Three years of approved teaching experience.
  • Completion of the Education Specialist in Educational Leadership or Doctorate in Leadership program or a program consisting of a master�s degree plus 30 semester hours in school administration.
  • Completion of a 320-hour field experience
  • A situational observation component by a team including a school administrator.

Students without a teaching license - Eligibility for K-12 Principal Licensure requires:

  • Completion of the Education Specialist in Educational Leadership or Doctorate in Leadership program or a program consisting of a master�s degree plus 30 semester hours in school administration.
  • Completion of a 320-hour field experience
  • A situational observation component by a team including a school administrator.
  • Completion the state required internship, which includes one school year of classroom experience.

Currently licensed elementary and secondary school principals wanting a K-12 principal license - Eligibility for K-12 Principal Licensure requires:

  • Completion of a 200-hour field experience.
  • Meet state required competencies.
  • A situational observation component by a team including a school administrator.
