Core Courses - 18 Semester Credits

Leaders and Organizations: Multidisciplinary Perspectives 1 (EDLD 910 - 2 Credits)

  • Reflect on the meaning and function of leadership from multidisciplinary and sometimes conflicting perspectives.
  • Be introduced to the leadership narrative theme that integrates the program.

Leaders and Organizations: Multidisciplinary Perspectives 2 (EDLD 911 - 3 Credits)

  • Consider the meaning and function of leadership from multidisciplinary perspectives.

Critical Issues in Their Political, Social and Economic Contexts (EDLD 912 - 4 Credits)

  • Study the role of leaders in dealing with economic and social forces.
  • Understand the complexities of power, politics and public policy affecting education and human services.
  • Review issues of economic justice and peace.

Power, Freedom and Change (EDLD 913 - 3 Credits)

  • Explore the dynamic relationship between power, human freedom and change. 
  • Consider theoretical perspectives of interpretations of power, freedom, and social change in a democratic society with specific reference to race, ethnicity, gender, and class.
  • Gather stories about specific situations in your workplaces and critique those stories in light of new understanding.

Ethical Dimensions of Leadership (EDLD 914 - 3 Credits)

  • Examine the sources of your values and evaluate the consequences of decisions based on those values.
  • Gain understanding of the ethical dimensions of an organization's mission on policies within global as well as national and local contexts.

Leadership Narrative Seminar (EDLD 915 - 3 Credits)

  • Integrate what you have learned in the core courses, professional education and collateral area studies.
  • Raise new issues.
  • Study leaders in biographies, novels and drama.
  • Reflect on the practice and study of  your own leadership.

Collateral Courses - 24 Semester Credits

You will work with faculty to outline a program of concentrated study.

If you do not have a master's degree in education, 12 credits of the professional collateral area must be taken in education.

If you have a master's degree in education, you must take 14 credits in education or a collateral field and 9 credits in a collateral field from the following graduate programs at the university:

  • Business communication
  • Business administration
  • International management
  • Computer software design
  • Counseling psychology
  • Social work
  • Divinity

Research Courses - 24 Semester Credits

Survey Research (EDLD 902 - 3 Credits)

  • Review the philosophical premises of survey research.
  • Learn item construction, analysis and the integration of surveys with other data collection techniques.
  • This course assumes completion of CIED 500, EDLD 625 and EDLD 904.

Qualitative Methods of Research and Evaluation (EDLD 904 - 3 Credits)

  • Explore qualitative, ethnographic and field methods in research and evaluation.
  • Learn the foundations of qualitative methods.
  • Review examples of qualitative research.
  • Understand conditions in which qualitative methods are appropriate and practice in using qualitative methods.
  • Collect data through participant observation and in-depth interviews.
  • Examine issues of validity, access to data and confidentiality.

Framing a Research Question/Proposal Design (EDLD 920-21 - 3 Credits)

  • Develop a research question with its attendant critical literature review.
  • Engage in creative, thoughtful reflection in choosing the research question for your dissertation proposal.

Select 1 of the following 3 courses:

Educational Statistics (EDLD 625 - 3 Credits)

  • Study descriptive and inferential statistics, including chi-square, analysis of variance, Pearson correlation, and regression analysis.
  • Use the Statistical Package for the Social Sciences (SPSS) for analysis.

Historical Methodology in Education (EDLD 903 - 3 Credits)

  • Study and discuss a variety of texts that demonstrate a mastery of the craft of historical research and writing.
  • Read and discuss materials that focus on how to write history well.

\Analysis of Qualitative Data (EDLD 905 - 3 Credits)

  • Read qualitative studies exemplifying various types of data analysis.
  • Study coding, data analysis, content analysis and alternative approaches to writing about qualitative research.
  • Prerequisite: EDLD 904.

Dissertation Requirement

This major paper demonstrates your ability to research an important question and to present and interpret the findings in clear and logical written form. The dissertation is completed under the supervision of a faculty chair and is formally presented in an oral presentation to the dissertation committee. Refer to Doctoral Student Handbook (e-mail the Department of Leadership, Policy and Administration to request a copy). A student will not be given a grade for any of the dissertation course numbers until the dissertation has been defended and approved by the committee. Prerequisites: EDLD 920 and EDLD 921.
