Master of Arts in Reading

K-12 Reading Endorsement Courses (18 Credits)
Research in Literacy (READ 500 – 3 Credits)

  • Examine literacy research for source, design, implication and classroom applications.

Content-area Literacy 5-12 (READ 702 – 3 Credits)

  • Develop reading and writing methods, strategies and procedures for grades 5-12.

  • Explore the best current practices and professional reading standards.

Emergent Literacy K-2 (READ 501 – 3 Credits)

  • Learn developmentally appropriate practices for kindergarten and primary grades.

Balanced Literacy K-6 (READ 701 – 3 Credits)

  • Develop knowledge and strategies in planning and teaching reading in grades K-6.

  • Explore the best current practices and professional reading standards.

Reading Assessment and Remediation (READ 704 – 3 Credits)

  • Explore the nature and causality of reading problems.

  • Study formal and informal approaches to diagnosis.

  • Develop reading programs for specific reading needs.

Practicum in Reading Assessment and Remediation (READ 720 – 3 Credits)

  • Participate in a supervised teaching experience that includes a comprehensive clinical diagnosis of reading difficulties of K-12 readers.

  • Learn to complete a formal case report.

  • Understand results of tutoring and make recommendations for future direction.

  • Prerequisites: READ 704 and instructor’s consent.

  • Apply by April 1 for summer school enrollment.

Master of Arts in Reading (12 Credits)

Complete an additional 12 credits beyond the reading endorsement to earn the Master of Arts in Reading.

 Administration and Supervision of the Reading Program (READ 795 – 3 Credits)

  • Study school-wide screening programs and alternative systems for delivery of reading services.

  • Foster relationships with other special service personnel, parents and teachers.

  • Evaluate reading programs.

  • Undertake in-service teacher training responsibilities.

Choose 1 of the Following 2 Courses:

Children’s Literature (CIED 710 – 3 Credits)

  • Familiarize yourself with recent and classical contributions to the field.

  • Survey children’s reading needs and interests.

  • Develop programs designed to encourage children to extend their reading practice.

Adolescent Literature (CIED 711 – 3 Credits)

  • Survey contemporary adolescent literature.

  • Explore ways in which this literature meets the reading interests and needs of adolescents.

  • Familiarize yourself with literature read by adolescents.

  • Develop programs to stimulate reading interests and practices.

Choose 1 of the Following 4 Courses:

Alternative Assessments for Literacy (READ 502 – 3 Credits)

Technology in the Literacy Classroom (READ 551 – 3 Credits)

  • Explore the use of the Internet in developing reading and writing skills.

The Language of Teaching and Learning (CIED 811 – 3 Credits)

  • Understand how teaching and learning takes place through classroom dialogue.

  • Explore the interactions of language, teaching and learning.

Arranged Special Topics in Literacy (3 Credits)

 

Final Integrative Paper/Project (READ 553 – 3 Credits)

  • Read and assess curricula materials.

  • Create original works for your work sites.
