Study Education and Technology in China!

An exciting study abroad opportunity in June 2008

Expand your knowledge of global education by experiencing first-hand the educational beliefs and use of technology in China. Through school site visits, lectures, presentations and informal dialogue, the course will explore how China’s educational beliefs and technology contribute to its rapidly changing society and booming economy. Participants will also learn about the evolution of China's educational system through historical site visits such as the Great Walls, Forbidden City, and the Museum of Terra Cotta Warriors. This is your opportunity to travel to China right before the 2008 summer Olympics!

Led by Candace Chou, Ph.D., assistant professor in the Department of Curriculum and Instruction, this course will also feature guest lecturers in China. All presentations and lectures will be taught in English.

Course: Technology and Education in Modern Chinese Society (CIED 690 – 3 Credits)

Who: Degree and non-degree seeking graduate students

When: June 16-28, 2008

Where: Beijing, Xian, and Shanghai, China

Program Cost: $4,495 (includes international and domestic airfares, visa, local accommodations, ground transportation, and most meals)

 

At the end of the course, you will be able to:

  • Understand the different schools of thought related to Chinese educational philosophy
  • Analyze the curriculum framework at K-12 schools

  • Critically review cases of technology integration in the K-12 classroom

  • Understand the cultural factors in technology implementation in education

  • Gain insight into the influences of Western civilization in Chinese society and its education system

  • Acquire basic understanding of Chinese culture, social customs and fundamental vocabulary

June 16, 2008:  Depart from Minneapolis

June 17, 2008:  Arrive in Beijing

June 18-22, 2008:  Beijing, China

June 23-24, 2008:  Xian, China

June 25-27, 2008:  Shanghai, China

June 28, 2008:  Depart from Shanghai

June 28, 2008:  Arrive in Minneapolis

July 12, 2008:  Debriefing and final presentation, Minneapolis Campus

Students seeking to apply for the program must download and turn in an application to the International Education Center located at the University of St. Thomas St. Paul campus. The application can be found at www.stthomas.edu/studyabroad.
