Introduction to Critical Pedagogy (CIED 901 - 3 Credits)

  • Understand the basic concepts and practices of critical pedagogy.
  • Review research, theory and philosophy in critical pedagogy.
  • Explore the extent to which critical pedagogy is present in your own practice.

Theoretical Foundations of Critical Pedagogy (CIED 902 - 6 Credits)

  • Examine the theoretical and philosophical underpinnings of critical pedagogy.
  • Study epistemological premises of various critical theories.

The Social Construction of Curriculum, Policy and Practice (CIED 903 - 3 Credits)

  • Explore analytical frameworks for understanding the ways in which curricula, policies and educational practices are constructed.
  • Examine the ways educational institutions and processes reproduce the dominant cultural values and economic relationships of the wider society.

Research Methods of Inquiry and Analysis (CIED 923 - 6 Credits)

  • Review of methods of inquiry for use in doctoral projects.

History of Critical Education (CIED 906 - 3 Credits)

  • Study methods of critical historical analysis.
  • Explore the history of democratic education movements and alternative education initiatives.          

Narratives of Critical Commitment and Practice (CIED 911 - 3 Credits)

  • Apply narrative and life history analyses to your own commitments, histories and practices as critical educators.
  • Research how your identity as a critical educator was formed and clarify the commitments that inform your practice.

Gender, Feminism and Sexuality (CIED 905 - 6 Credits)

  • Study the history of feminist movements and various feminist theories.
  • Understand the principles of feminist pedagogy and the connections to curriculum development and teaching.
  • Explore a specifically feminist approach to critical practice.

Social Movements in Critical Education (CIED 907 - 3 Credits)

  • Explore the educational nature of social movements.
  • Investigate the relationship between critical pedagogy and social movements.      

Multiculturalism, Diversity and Anti-Racist Practice (CIED 908 - 6 Credits)

  • Examine conceptualizations of racism.
  • Explore ways to generate and implement anti-racist teaching and curricular approaches. 

Demonstrating Critical Practice (CIED 909 - 3 credits)

  • Build and implement critical curricula.
  • Collaborate through the cohort in the evaluation of demonstration projects.

Planning the Doctoral Dissertation (CIED 920 - 3 Credits)

  • Complete a draft proposal for your doctoral project.

Contracting the Doctoral Dissertation (CIED 921 - 3 credits)

  • Study the rationales for using learning contracts to complete the doctoral project.
  • Survey the different approaches to contract writing including collaborative learning contracts.
