Admissions

In order to apply to this doctoral program, a master's degree or its equivalent with a minimum cumulative grade point average (G.P.A.) of 2.75 is required.

The admissions decision is based on several components. You will develop an applicant portfolio that will demonstrate your strengths, experiences and goals from a variety of perspectives. Writing components are not only a demonstration of writing skill but also of reflective and critical thinking.

Application Deadline: February 15th, 2007 


Key criteria for admission are consistent with doctoral level study, including:

  • Communicating clearly in verbal and written forms.
  • Identifying and researching assumptions in teaching, theory and scholarship.
  • Building arguments grounded in evidence.
  • Evaluating scholarly research and argument.
  • Working cooperatively with peers.

Phase 1: Initial application

1. $50 application fee. Make check payable to University of St. Thomas.

3. Official transcripts from colleges or universities of all undergraduate and graduate coursework. Transcripts must show grade point average and completion of a bachelor's and master's degree. Transcript Request Form (pdf)

4. Two letters of recommendation. Select supervisors, colleagues or persons who can speak to your personal and professional strengths and your ability to succeed as a graduate student. Recommendation form (pdf)

5. A current professional resume.

6. An autobiographical statement (maximum 1000 words; double-spaced). Outline how and why your experience qualifies you to participate in this program. Use this opportunity to tell about yourself in relation to the work you see yourself doing with critical pedagogy. Think about specific events in your life that have brought you to this kind of program. Describe some of the important experiences that stand out for you as you work for a critical stance in your community, school, work and life.

7. An example of your academic work that demonstrates competence at the level of doctoral study (e.g., articles, master's thesis, handbook, district project).
▪ Please submit one example only.
▪ Material must fit inside a 9-by-12-inch file.
▪ Do not send three-ring binders.

Phase 2: Writing Sample

Writing Sample Deadline: February 20, 2007


After all application materials are submitted, candidates will receive a writing assignment to complete and return by a deadline. The writing assignment will be based on an article related to the themes of the doctoral program. Specific guidelines will accompany the assignment. Candidates will be asked questions regarding their written assignments during their interviews.

Phase 3: Interview


Interview Dates: March 5-16, 2007


As the final admissions component, candidates will be invited on campus for interviews with program faculty.
