Race, Power and Education (CIED 653 - 3 Credits)

  • Explore theoretical frameworks that provide a variety of lenses to examine the impact of race on education in the U.S.
  • Examine racial inequalities and divisions within the educational institutions, educational policies and practices.
  • Understand the historical foundations of race relations interconnected to gender and class relations as they relate to the schooling process.

Multicultural Curriculum (CIED 654 - 3 Credits)

  • Use multiculturalism to critically examine and transform existing curriculum.
  • Study the interconnectedness of curriculum and power.
  • Explore various theories, models, and issues related to the multicultural curriculum development.

Multicultural Communities and Schools (CIED 655 - 3 Credits)

  • Explore ways in which the community can become a rich multicultural resource for schools.
  • Apply strategies for investigating community resources.
  • Research existing school/community relations.
  • Explore alternative models of community/school relations from a multicultural perspective.

Culturally Responsive Pedagogy (CIED 656 - 3 Credits)

  • Study how classroom teaching and learning are embedded in the context of a multicultural school system, administrative structure, and school culture.
  • Explore and develop culturally responsive pedagogy and anti-racist practices.
  • Develop an integrative project that encompasses and expresses the major skills and knowledge developed throughout the certificate program.
