The University of St. Thomas School of Education offers an extensive range of undergraduate and graduate elementary and middle level and secondary and middle level teacher licensure programs. These standards-based programs embrace the liberal arts, emphasize ethical practice and prepare creative, reflective educators dedicated to the success of all learners. They prepare professional educators who can demonstrate appropriate knowledge, skills and dispositions related to the following outcomes:

  • Subject matter
  • Student learning
  • Diverse learners
  • Instructional strategies
  • Learning environments
  • Communication
  • Planning for instruction
  • Assessment of learning
  • Reflection, scholarship and continuous professional development
  • Collaboration, ethics and relationships

Basic licensure and master of arts in teaching programs emphasize active, outcome-oriented learning and are designed to produce teachers who are reflective, continuing learners; global citizens; scholarly professionals; instructional leaders; curriculum specialists; effective communicators and collaborative agents of change. The program at the University of St. Thomas models the use of partnerships between university and school settings and between education and liberal arts faculties.

The School of Education encourages students to gain experience in working with young people in schools, social and recreational centers, rehabilitation agencies and other appropriate settings.

The School of Education offers post-baccalaureate programs for the professional preparation of teachers at the elementary and secondary levels. These programs are designed for individuals who have completed baccalaureate degrees in fields other than education, or for practicing, licensed teachers who wish to add an additional license (upgrading a minor to a major, completing a second major, or adding a kindergarten endorsement).

Students have opportunities to meet initial licensure requirements while earning credits toward a graduate degree. Students may choose to earn licensure only or, with the completion of additional requirements, earn the Master of Arts in Teaching.

Students who successfully complete program requirements will be recommended by the University of St. Thomas to the State of Minnesota for teaching licensure. University of St. Thomas teacher education programs are fully accredited by the Higher Learning Commission and a member of the North Central Association of Colleges and Schools. School of Education licensure programs prepare students for the most recent licensing requirements established by the Minnesota Department of Children, Families and Learning and the Minnesota Board of Teaching.
