The School of Education has offered outreach opportunities for professional advancement since 1974. Programs are offered across Minnesota and in other national and international locations. There are two areas with specialized educational opportunities: continuing professional education and off campus programs.

Continuing professional education graduate courses, workshops and seminars meet the continuing education needs of professional educators. Credits earned through these programs meet requirements for license renewal and may be used for lane changes when prior approval has been obtained by the student from his or her district or employment personnel office. A student registering for continuing education courses must hold a baccalaureate degree. Continuing education (CTED) credits are intended primarily to fulfill license renewal and lane-change requirements; however, CTED credits may apply as transfer credits to St. Thomas graduate programs only when prior approval has been received from the department chair and in accordance with transfer-of-credit policies for the School of Education. Students interested in petitioning continuing education credits into a graduate program at another institution are advised to obtain prior approval from that institution. The School of Education offers complete graduate degrees and certificate programs at various off-campus locations where a sufficient number of qualified participants apply for admission. Off campus and certificate programs have the same admission requirements, faculty, coursework and degree requirements as on-campus programs. The course of study for these programs is based on a cohort, adult-learner model with flexible evening and weekend scheduling. Students enrolled in an off campus or certificate program have access to the same services as on-campus students, including advising, library services, financial aid, e-mail and career counseling.
