Practicum in Ukraine
2
"If we wanted to describe..."
  • If we wanted to describe our experience in one word it would be “Great”. This word has different meanings, all of which can be applied to this practicum.

  • So, this experience was a distinguished one among other professional experiences we ever had.

  • For us it was a huge leap in our learning curve.
  • We demonstrated that we are remarkably skilled professionals.

  • We visited the capital city, Kiev, which is the main city of Ukraine.

  • Additionally, using this word as a generalized term of approval, we had a great time in general.

"To sum up the trip"
  •       To sum up the trip, we would say that we worked extensively with the clients, traveled by foot, dined with the cohort members, shopped, and attended a ballet. The week was hard work and easy camaraderie.
4
"The local commute on the..."

  •       The local commute on the first morning was the hardest part, given the freshly fallen snow, lack of sleep, and taking the “around about” way to get to the business school.

  •       Using the metro made us feel part of the working life and city and was great way to watch people.
5
"The flexibility,"
  •      The flexibility, resiliency, and general good nature of the group members were apparent and remained intact throughout the week and trip.
6
"Other than being a little..."
  •       Other than being a little loud in public (which we tried to moderate) and visibly American in dress and demeanor, we were well-mannered and appreciative guests.

7
"Some of our strengths as"
  •       Some of our strengths as  OD consultants were affirmed during the week as we worked at Kyiv-Mohyla Business School and EBS Consulting Company in Kiev.

8
"We had a genuine interest..."

  •       We had a genuine interest in the welfare of others that was apparent to them (even across cultures) and they responded with trust and openness.
9
"By observing this culture,"
  •       By observing this culture, we were reminded of the characteristics of the American business culture.

  •       There are similarities, such as the drive to succeed and profit.  The differences were about the way employees felt about their companies.
10
"We were amazed by the..."
  •        We were amazed by the energy and passion people had for their work and the organization.

  •        American companies would die to have that level of commitment and passion.

11
"Seeing that energy in the..."
  •       Seeing that energy in the organization was a real eye opening experience.

  •      We thought it would be a Soviet type of culture, but these folks would put many American firms to shame.

12
The best part of the trip was walking around experiencing the culture and sharing observations, experiences, and making decisions with the fellow cohort members.
13
"Our free time and dinner..."
14
"We particularly enjoyed ribbing each..."
  •        We particularly enjoyed ribbing each other at dinner, interacting with people from another culture, and sharing experiences with each other about our client experiences.
15
"It was a challenge to..."
  •       It was a challenge to spend eight days together with limited time of being apart from the group.

  •       It reminded us of a space shuttle crew. However, there was no arguing, emotional outbursts, or dissatisfaction expressed. All of us were incredibly tolerant and compatible.
16
"We found the practicum to..."
  •       We found the practicum to be an outstanding experience.  The people we went with were great and the people we had the chance to work with in Ukraine were both warm and helpful.  Doing an international practicum is something we would recommend to future cohorts.

The narrative was based on the abstracts from the reflection papers of Mary Cannata, Tracy Engstrand, Steve Manderscheid, Peggy Sundermeyer and their peer and guide in Ukraine, Alla Heorhiadi.
