

Will Steger received his master of arts in improvement of instruction with a field area in geology and biology from St. Thomas in 1970. He taught science for three years at the secondary level and later founded a winter school in Ely Minnesota and for ten years pioneered outdoor programs. In 1993, Steger founded the World School for Adventure Learning at the University of St. Thomas.
Will has logged thousands of miles of travel by dog sled in the Arctic regions and has become a voice for understanding and preservation of the Arctic. He has led the first confirmed dogsled journey to the North Pole without re-supply and the International Arctic Project, a five-person international expedition which traveled from Russia to Canada across the Arctic Ocean. In 1995, Steger received the National Geographic Society's John Oliver La Gorce Medal for "accomplishments in geographic exploration, in the sciences, and for public service to advance international understanding." He recently established the Will Steger Foundation, a non-profit, environmental action organization whose first initiative is global warming 101. His articles and photographs have appeared in numerous international and national publications, including National Geographic magazine.
