Michael Huerth, the first Minnesota recipient of the Milken Family Foundation's National Educator Award, has been an educator for 29 years. He taught American Indian studies at South High School in Minneapolis and the Flandreau Indian School in South Dakota. In the Minneapolis Public Schools, Huerth served as program coordinator for the district's Indian education program and assistant principal at Washburn and South high schools. In Minneapolis, he has gained a reputation for improving performance and participation at several schools. Huerth has been principal of Henry, South and Roosevelt high schools. While principal at Henry and at South, the schools each received quality performance awards for their increases in student attendance. Huerth is currently principal of Anishinabe Academy in Minneapolis.
