K-12 READING INSTRUCTION

Preparation for Minnesota’s Licensure Requirements

Today’s reading teachers need to understand effective, advanced strategies for improving the language and literacy skills of their students. More and more, states and the federal government are stepping in requiring teachers to complement and extend their professional expertise in reading instruction, resulting in better, more efficient instruction for their students.

Teachers with the reading endorsement study leading-edge, scientifically-based reading research, theory and practice and can immediately apply what they learn in the classroom. Reading educators can also develop literacy strategies, comprehension processes and assessment, and remediation techniques.

St. Thomas prepares educators to meet the requirements of the Minnesota Board of Teaching’s Reading Licensure Rule* required for all educators to teach reading.

Who should pursue the reading endorsement?

  • Middle school or secondary teachers who teach reading.
  • Teachers who want to upgrade their proficiency in teaching reading.
  • Teachers who seek career advancement as a literacy leader, coach, or provide reading intervention or remediation.

This requirement can be satisfied with the St. Thomas Master of Arts degree in K-12 Reading Instruction or Minnesota K-12 Teacher of Reading Endorsement, conveniently offered evenings at the downtown Minneapolis campus or other locations throughout the Twin Cities and beyond. You can meet the Minnesota license requirement by taking the first six courses only, or continue on and take four additional courses to earn your master’s.
