The certificate in Public Policy and Leadership will provide you with the knowledge base and leadership skills required in today’s increasingly policy-driven environment.
In this program you will:
- Identify how particular policies are placed on the agendas of policy makers.
- Understand influences on policy development – from shrinking budgets to power elites.
- Attain expertise in administrative law, policy implementation and program evaluation.
- Obtain an understanding of the theories of policy making and ethical leadership.
- Grow politically adept by listening to diverse views and collaborating with others in various policy arenas.
- Be prepared for management positions in public affairs.
We seek students who are passionate about social justice and advancing the common good through public policy arenas, including legislative, administrative and community-based experiences.

Public Policy and Leadership graduates use their knowledge and skills to pursue a wide variety of personal goals. Some examples include:
- Running a state-wide program that supports victims of domestic violence. This alumna is involved in rule-drafting, working with the legislature and developing the systems a new program demands.
- Management positions in state, county and municipal agencies.
- Communications and policy positions with the Minneapolis Public Schools.
- Lobbying in Washington D.C.
- Admission into J.D. and Ed.D. leadership programs.

The Flexibility You Need
The Public Policy and Leadership program is designed to maximize balance between your personal and professional commitments. Most courses meet one evening per week in downtown Minneapolis in the spring and fall semesters. We also offer courses in the summer and during J-term. This flexibility offers the optimum ability to work on your own time and at your own pace. Electives allow you to tailor your program to fit your interests and objectives.
