Understanding Music and Culture: Part I

Part I of this two-part program will begin the exploration of  the classics of European and American music in their historical, cultural, and social contexts by studying the fundamentals of music and its development up to approximately 1850.  Beginning with the elements of music and musical instruments and ensembles, Medieval and Renaissance music will be studies.  Part I is designed to enable students, regardless of musical background, to increase their understanding of music in an interactive, hands-on manner.  The listening skills and knowledge acquired will provide a foundation for being a more critical and discerning listener of music of all types.  Participants may interact with the instructor and each other in two schedule synchronous class sessions on Tuesday, January 15 and Monday, February 4 between 7 and 9 pm (CST).  You will receive information on how to access this program via e-mail following receipt of your registration.
It is recommended that Part I or its equivalent be completed before taking Part II.

Understanding Music and Culture: Part II

Part II of this two-part program will explore the classics of European and American music in their historical, cultural, and social contexts, beginning with the Baroque period.  Considerable time will be spent on 18th century classical chamber and symphony music, the concerto and sonata, choral music and the opera.  The study of the Romantic Movement of the 19th century will provide examples of piano music, program music, symphonies, concertos, choral and dramatic music, and finally the rise of classical composition in America.  The 20th century music of the Impressionist and Post Impressionist eras will be studied along with new currents and trends in the arts, and popular 20th century styles such as ragtime, blues, jazz, swing, and musical theater.  Participants may interact with the instructor and each other in two scheduled synchronous class sessions on Wednesday, January 16 and Tuesday, February 5 between 7 and 9 p.m. (CST).  You will receive information on how to access this program via e-mail following receipt of your registration.  It is recommended that Part I or its equivalent be completed before starting Part II.

Self-Knowledge through Writing Your Memoir

An On-line Retreat Workshop Prepared by Eleanor Lincoln, CSJ

Women at the Well Ministry, St. Paul, Minnesota

 

Dr. Eleanor Lincoln, CSJ is a retired professor of English from The College of St. Catherine.  She has given numerous workshops on memoir writing.  This workshop is adapted for your personal use.  There is no charge for this program.

There is a text available to accompany the online workshop material, Memory and Memoir, which may be purchased for $9.95.  Follow the reflection and writing suggestions in the eight chapters, and you will soon have a portion of your life on paper.

The Glory of God Is a Person FULLY ALIVE

An On-Line Retreat Prepared by Eleanor Lincoln, CSJ & Catherine Litecky, CSJ

Women at the Well Ministry, St. Paul, Minnesota

 

An historical examination of the prayer life of six great figures in Christianity:  Paul, Hildegard of Bingen, Francis of Assisi, Julian of Norwich, Teilhard de Chardin and Dorothy Day.  There are brief bibliographies given for each figure to accompany the on-line material.  A self-paced, retreat-like experience that asks one to reflect on “How to be fully alive in God’s glory.”   There is no charge for this program.
