Understanding Music and Culture is presented in two parts:
Participants are encouraged to complete Part I prior to participating in Part II
Part II of this two-part program will explore the classics of European and American music in their historical, cultural, and social contexts, beginning with the Baroque period. Considerable time will be spent on 18th century classical chamber and symphony music, the concerto and sonata, choral music and the opera. The study of the Romantic Movement of the 19th century will provide examples of piano music, program music, symphonies, concertos, choral and dramatic music, and finally the rise of classical composition in America. The 20th century music of the Impressionist and Post Impressionist eras will be studied along with new currents and trends in the arts, and popular 20th century styles such as ragtime, blues, jazz, swing, and musical theater. (It is recommended Part I be completed before starting Part II)
