Understanding Music and Culture to 1850 - Part I
(An on-line program)

Dr. Christopher Kachian

Department of Music, University of St. Thomas

January 7 to February 15, 2008

Understanding Music and Culture will be taught in two parts
beginning this January and continuing in January, '09.

Part I will explore the classics of European and American music in their historical, cultural, and social contexts, beginning with the fundamentals of music and its development up to approximately 1850.  It is designed to enable students, regardless of musical background, to increase their understanding of music.  This highly interactive program will teach you the fundamentals of music and give you opportunities to test your knowledge, compose your own tunes, and learn from an expert.  The listening skills and knowledge acquired will provide a foundation for being a more critical and discerning listener of music of all types.  (Part II will take participants from 1850 to the present.)

During the designated six weeks of this program, Dr. Kachian will meet with participants on-line synchronously on two specific evenings; he will also be available via e-mail for questions and discussion.
These on-line 'class meetings' will be Tuesday, January 15 and Monday, February 4, from 7:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. CST

Cost:   $50 Registration Fee + $97 for required text and 5 CD’s
Usable for both Part I and Part II and a valuable addition to your library.
