During construction, St. Thomas will lose up to 148 parking spaces – up to 125 in Lot N and 23 in Lot U – because they are within the building construction footprint or will be used as part of the staging area. In addition, the university will lose 20-70 parking spaces during construction, from May 19 to early November. Crew members will park in in Lot O southwest of McCarthy Gymnasium until November, when they will park on the lower level of the ramp.
The lost spaces will not present a problem during the summer because ample parking is available elsewhere on campus. The university believes it will have sufficient parking on campus during fall semester – early September to mid-December – to handle the spaces lost to construction. Lot counts taken during fall 2007 showed that even at the busiest time of day, there were 345 open spaces – 175 (at 11 a.m.) for faculty, staff and commuter students and 170 (at 8 a.m.) for resident students – with 90 of those on the south campus alone. Resident students who have parked in Lot U will move to Lots V, X and Y, near Cretin Hall, and Lot N users typically will use Lots O and W, which typically have 100-125 open spaces on weekdays.
