Academic Council
(1) Purpose
The Academic Council shall be an
advisory board to the President on
faculty rank and tenure.
(2) Membership
The Academic Council shall consist
of:
(a) The President, a non-voting
member; and the following voting
members:
(b) The Vice President for
Academic Affairs; and,
(c) Eight tenured faculty: one
from each of the five governance
groups; and three at-large faculty
members. Two of the eight members
must be undergraduate and two
graduate faculty.
(d) Faculty with full-time
administrative appointments,
department chairs, and program
directors are specifically excluded
from membership. Faculty assuming
such positions will be required to
resign from the Council. Faculty
holding combined appointments may be
nominated and elected under either
their graduate or their undergraduate
appointment. Current members

(3) Electing Body and Terms of
Office
The University Faculty elects the
Academic Council for four year terms.
(4) Chair
The President chairs the Academic
Council.
(5) Procedures
(a) Applications for tenure and
promotion are to follow the
procedures documented in the Faculty
Handbook.
(b) The President shall appoint
one of the members as secretary to
keep minutes of all meetings, and to
be informed as to all pertinent facts
in the cases to be discussed at
meetings. The secretary will send
notices of meetings, with the agenda.
(c) The Academic Council shall
meet at least once during each
semester.
(d) The appropriate Dean or
Director of the academic unit
presents the file of the candidate
for tenure or promotion and is
present for discussion, but does not
vote and is not present for the vote.
In the case of a candidate who holds
a combined appointment, the Dean or
Director of the academic unit in
which the faculty member holds his or
her primary appointment presents the
case; the Dean or Director of the
academic unit in which the faculty
member holds his or her secondary
appointment may, however, be present
for the presentation and may add any
additional, pertinent comments.
(e) All Council members who have
participated in the decision on a
tenure or promotion application at a
lower level shall excuse themselves
from the deliberations and voting in
the Academic Council in that case.
(f) At
the request of the Council, a
specific chair or director of an
academic unit or the chair of a
tenure committee may be asked to
appear before the Council to provide
information or clarification, or to
answer questions relevant to a
candidate.
