Winner of numerous Mark of Excellence Awards from the Society of Professional Journalists, Campus Scope is a student-produced newsmagazine for the students, staff and faculty at the University of St. Thomas. Students involved in the organization learn the roles and responsibilities required of television journalists, producers, photographers, editors, and digital illustrators and, of course, on-camera talent.
The monthly programs are supervised by a faculty advisor from the Communication & Journalism Department and planned by a board of four: program producer, associate producer, program director and news director. Volunteer reporters and photographers write, shoot and edit field packages for the show.
On the first Friday of the month, the program is assembled live-to-tape. On that day and every two weeks, the news headlines are updated for a more timely look at recent events.
Working in the organization and on the program is not for course credit, but for an experience that mirrors the real world of television production:
An important dimension of the process is learning about the standards expected of them in the newsroom or production facility. They learn about technical standards, aesthetics, design and they learn how to communicate effective messages to their target audience. As journalists they learn to report fairly, accurately and with a balance of perspectives on controversial topics.
Students who have worked on Campus Scope have several advantages over those who only take our courses: A depth of experience gained from working on many stories as they sharpen their skills; a professional sample reel; expertise in an area of specialization such as shooting, editing, reporting or producing; and board members have supervisory experience and knowledge of the daily routines and processes for producing a high-quality video magazine.
We meet on Tuesdays from 12:00 noon until 1:00 in LIB LL 14 (in tunnel
