Scholarship and service:

As a first-generation American, Professor Gavrilos has always been intrigued by the question of what it means to be “American.”  Her research problematizes cultural understandings of national identity that arise through popular representations of privileged and marginalized racial/ethnic identities (as well as inter-related identities of class, gender and sexuality).  Writing and presenting on this topic since 2000, Professor Gavrilos’ goal is to bring attention, both inside and outside the classroom, to the devastating social injustices and diminished life opportunities inflicted on those deemed outside the norm in U.S. culture.

At UST:
Professor Gavrilos joined UST in 2006.
