3M Donates High Resolution MS to UST Chemistry

3M Corporation has improved the instrumental capabilities of the UST Chemistry department through the generous donation of a Micromass QTOF2 high resolution mass spectrometer.  This instrument, which has an electrospray ionization (ESI) source, utilizes a time of flight (TOF) analyzer to obtain mass spectra with very high resolution (M/dM ~ 10,000).  This "exact mass" data provides very strong evidence for identifying or verifying the structure of unknown compounds.  This instrument will greatly support the research of many UST faculty members by helping synthetic chemists verify the structure of their products and environmental chemists to identify unknown compounds in the processes they are studying.

The St. Thomas Chemistry Department is very grateful to 3M for this generous donation.
