The field of asymmetric organocatalysis has grown rapidly in the last decade and now provides access to an extensive catalog of previously unattainable transformations. However, the rush to exploit the potential of this field has left a void between innovation and understanding with many unexpected or contradictory findings going unexplained. The lack of information on the behavior of these reactions limits their potential for further development. Employing a combination of theoretical, analytical and synthetic methods we explore and elucidate the mechanisms and selectivity patterns of organocatalytic reactions. The discoveries made with these techniques have led to improved reaction conditions, decreased catalyst loading, and better stereocontrol.

Dr. Rebecca Davis of the University of Manitoba will present her work studying the mechanisms of organocatalytic transformations.
