| The first course in a two-semester sequence examining the chemistry underlying biological processes. The topics addressed include a review of the properties of aqueous solutions and buffers; the structure and function of proteins, carbohydrates and lipids; an introduction to the properties, reaction kinetics and catalytic mechanism of enzymes; membrane structure and function; qualitative and quantitative models of bioenergetics; and an introduction to metabolic regulation and control featuring carbohydrate metabolism as well as the citric acid cycle. Lecture plus four laboratory hours per week. Offered fall semester. Prerequisite: A minimum grade of C- in CHEM 202 | ||||||
