Greetings to all alumni!  Beginning this year, we will be communicating news from the department electronically.  Please follow the links below to find stories on the events of the past year in our department.  As always, we would be very happy to hear from you.  Please click on the alumni contact form on the side bar of the UST Chemistry Alumni page and send us information on what you are up to.  Note that the alumni page also has a new Featured Alumnus/Alumna spotlight where we note the accomplishments of some of our graduates.

New Faculty Hires: We are happy to be joined by a new colleague - Mithra Marcus, and to promote long time staff member Bill Ojala to a faculty position.

UST Chemistry and Collaborating ACTC Schools Receive NSF-MRI Grant for LC-MS/MS System

Three UST Chemistry faculty were joined by colleagues at Augsburg and Macalester on a successful proposal to purchase this instrument.  Together with the acquisition of the high resolution QTOF instrument (see below), UST Chemistry now has a mass spectrometry facility that rivals any primarily undergraduate department in the country.

3M Donates High Resolution Mass Spectrometer to UST Chemistry  UST Chemistry is grateful to 3M for the donation of this powerful instrument, which will help our research students identify their compounds through exact mass measurements.

Chemistry Club Recognized by ACS: The UST Chemistry Club has been honored as "Outstanding" by the ACS for each of the past 3 years.  In addition, club members authored an article in the ACS publication "In Chemistry" regarding their work with high school teachers (click here to view the article). The club continues to be active in working with local schools and the local section of the ACS to promote chemistry, as well as to be a big part of an excellent community of chemists at St. Thomas.  The club has about 50 members each year, making it the 3rd largest student organization at UST.

Alumni Notes:  Several of our alumni have visited us over the past year, sometimes helping out as speakers or panelists for our seminar or sometimes just stopping by.  Please stop by or send us news regarding what you are doing.  The chemistry alumni website provides an easy way to do this.

***Please meet us at the Spring ACS National Meeting or other conferences***.  Every year UST Chemistry is represented at the Spring ACS National Meeting and other scientific conferences by several faculty and students.  We would love to meet up with alumni of the department while we are there.  Please contact Tony Borgerding or Tom Ippoliti if you would like to meet up with St. Thomas faculty and students at the ACS meeting or others that you attend.
