About

Welcome From the Department Chair

Dr. Tony Borgerding

Greetings from the UST Chemistry Department. I would like to point out just a few of the exceptional qualities of our chemistry department, and that starts with our faculty.  Our department has 12 talented faculty members, each of whom is devoted to student learning. Our first priority is excellent teaching, and our department is well known for its great instruction, both in the classroom and in working with students in research labs. Each faculty member is concerned that students have the best possible experience in our department.

In our opinion, an important part of that experience is research. All of our faculty perform research, which creates an excellent learning environment for student researchers.  There are many opportunities for interested undergraduates to take part in research projects, either during the regular semester or during the summer. For example, for each of the past 5 years we have had over 40 undergraduates involved in different research projects in our department. All of them were receiving a stipend.

We are fortunate to be housed in a new building with the very latest laboratory designs, equipment, and instrumentation, including many instruments usually found only in much larger departments. We offer two chemistry majors, a Bachelor of Science and a Bachelor of Arts. There are many choices for the next step after a chemistry major. Our graduates have moved on in various ways: to graduate school, to medical school or other professional school, or directly to employment in the chemical industry.  All of these paths lead to interesting careers in fields ranging from pharmaceuticals, materials (including electronics), environmental chemistry, instrumentation, and a wealth of other interesting areas.

We invite you to come and visit us at the University of St Thomas, and we are confident that you will be impressed by our chemistry department.
