Many resources can be found online. We’ve compiled the following list to help you in your search for information for small businesses and entrepreneurs.

St. Thomas Center for Entrepreneurship
This site provides a link to the John M. Morrison Center for Entrepreneurship where the entrepreneurial spirit takes flight. Located within the College of Business in downtown Minneapolis, the Center serves as a liaison between academic and lifelong learning programs and outreach initiatives.

St. Thomas Small Business Development Center
In 21 years, over 10,000 small businesses and entrepreneurs in the Twin Cities area have benefited from the services offered by the University of St. Thomas Small Business Development Center (SBDC). The Center provides free one-on-one business consulting and sponsors seminars and networking opportunities for small business owners and entrepreneurs. In its annual list of “Best Business Schools for Entrepreneurs,” SUCCESS Magazine ranked the University of St. Thomas as the nation’s fifth best.

The Family Business Center is committed to the growth and continuity of family enterprises. It is a learning community dedicated to teaching, research, and program development to support individuals, families and professionals in family businesses.

SCORE: Service Corps of Retired Executives
The SCORE Association is a nonprofit association dedicated to entrepreneur education and the formation, growth and success of small business nationwide. SCORE is a resource partner with the Small Business Administration (SBA). SCORE Association volunteers serve as “Counselors to America’s Small Business.”Working and retired executives and business owners donate their time and expertise as volunteer business counselors and provide confidential counseling and mentoring free of charge.

The Intellectual Property Network (IPN) lets you search and view patent documents from the U.S. and Europe as well as patent applications published by World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO).

American Express Small Business Services
General site for small business

iAtlas
Now merged with AtlaVista, this is a search engine which focuses on businesses with an Internet presence. They have some unique filters (like SIC code, geography, size of company, web technology, etc.). Once you find a company, you can search all the web sites associated with that company and its competitors.

Inc. Magazine Online
Lots of resources for the business owner: how to create a web site, articles, events, bulletin boards, etc.

Business 2.0

Palo Alto Software
Offers software for ~ $125 to help an entrepreneur write their business plan. Not highly recommended as it has a tendency to put words in their mouths, but at least it gets them thinking about the important issues.

Ernst & Young
E&Y does some good work with entrepreneurship. Check out publications on their web site related to entrepreneurship. See “Outline for a Business Plan: A Proven Approach for Entrepreneurs Only”. The Business Plan framework was endorsed by the Wharton Business Plan Competition.

Business Plan Pro
Has samples of business plans and other resources for the entrepreneur starting out.

Garage.com
“VC broker on the WEB” has information for entrepreneurs developing a plan.

Mid Atlantic Venture Funds
This site provides good articles and other related information to small business financing.

Catalog of Federal Domestic Assistance
A searchable database of both financial and non-financial assistance programs of Federal government. Includes grants, loans, insurance, mortgage assistance, scholarships, technical assistance, counseling, etc.

Census Bureau Home Page
The Census Bureau provides Data Access Tools on-line that will allow you to create custom data extracts from surveys, including the Current Population Survey, the Survey of Income and Program Participation, America Housing Survey, etc. Marketers will find on-line access to this information, particularly useful in the analysis of populations, housing, geographies, and so forth.

Internal Revenue Service
Home page for the IRS. Has a selection specifically for small business.

SBA Online
General information about the US Small Business Administration and SBA programs, including loan programs. Mostly background info. Includes info on Women’s Business programs and loans. Includes list of links to other small business sites.

U.S. Business Advisor
Designed to be the central business clearinghouse for US federal regulations, procurement, financial, trade, and labor. The regulations database is extensive including US Code, Congressionally-approved Public laws, Executive Orders, even Tribal Laws. Regulations are segmented into Labor, Environment, Safety, Communication, Immigration, Taxation, general and laws in development. Laws up for Public Comment are included.

US Copyright Office
Basic information about copyrights, how to apply, how to search for copyrights. You cannot search for copyright here.

US Patent & Trademark Office
Extensive background information on patents and trademarks: including basic information, definitions of patents and trademarks, how to register, fees, list of patent lawyers.

Chambers of Commerce Directory
This site is a compilation of national city chambers of commerce searchable by state, city name or keyword.

Small Business Development Centers
This site lists the location of and contact information for every SBDC office in the United States.
