How do I assess course-based assignments?

1. Under the Pending Tasks section of the Home tab, click “You have Pending Assessments”. You will see a list of your assignments and the names of the students who have submitted the assignments.

2. To assess a particular student, click on the student’s name. A split screen will appear. The assessment rubric is on the right and the student’s work is on the left.

Note: You can adjust the middle bar to change the width of the columns.

3. To see the student’s artifact, select the name of the assignment on the left side of the screen. Three tabs will appear.

    • The Basic tab will show the artifact template and any work the student was asked to complete on the template itself. (Not all artifact templates require completion of the template itself; some merely require an attachment.)
    • The Documents tab will allow you to download the student’s attachment if any attachments were required. Select the link(s).  If it is a Word document, it will open in Word; Excel will open in Excel, etc.
    • The Feedback tab allows you to see any feedback requests the student has made.

4. Refer to the split screen and select the link for any pending assessment tools. If the assessment tool is a rubric, select the radio button that corresponds to the rating you wish to give. Do this for every criterion listed.

Note: Grade is not a required field.

6. Select “Save” to leave this screen and save all entries.

7. Select “Submit” to complete the assessment and send it to the student.

Why did my Pending Task(s) disappear?

Pending tasks will sometimes disappear from the user’s home page after the end of the term. The tasks themselves do not disappear from Tk20, rather only the link is removed from the home page. To access your students’ assignments, follow these steps:

1. Click the “Courses” tab.

2. Select the appropriate term in the drop-down menu.

3. Navigate to the course and hover over the number in the colored section to see a list of students.

4. Click on the name of the student you want to assess.

How do I complete an observation?

Observations allow the instructor to submit an assessment when the student is not required to submit anything through Tk20.

Note: Do not use this feature unless your scoring rubric has been approved for observation use.

1. Click the "Courses" tab.

2. Click "Observations" on the right-hand side of the page.

3. Click the "Assess" link.

4. Select the rubric you need to score from the drop-down menu.

5. If you are listed as the instructor for the course you want to assess, you can select the course and click the "Next" button. If not, you will need to follow these steps to find the course:

    • Click the “Select more courses” link.
    • Add the course to the Number field and select the Term. Click "Search".
    • Check the box next to the section you want to assess and click the "Add" button.
    • If you need to select another course, click the “Select more courses” link. If not, check the box next to the Course and click the "Next" button.

6. Click the "Add New" button under the student you want to assess.

7. Score the rubric. Click "Submit" at the bottom of the page.

8. If you need to assess another student, repeat steps six and seven. If not, click "Save" at the bottom of the page.

I assigned the wrong score/grade to the assignment.  How can I change my assessment?

If you have submitted a grade for an assignment that is incorrect, you can revoke the assessment (not the assignment!) and make any necessary changes.

1. Once log into Tk20, go to the “Courses” Tab, and click “Assignments”.

2. Select the name of the assignment, then the name of the student whose grade you need to change.

3. Select the “Revoke Assessment” button. The binder for assessment will reopen. You can make the necessary changes to the assessment tool, score, or grade.

What to do if a student submits an assignment with the wrong artifact or without an artifact?

If the assignment status shows as Open for Editing in the student’s assignment list (“Courses” tab-> Assignments), the student can recall the assignment by marking the checkbox of the assignment in the list and selecting "Recall". If the status is listed as Assessment Pending, the student may also try to recall the assignment; however, if you have started completing the assessment tool the student will receive a message stating that the assignment cannot be recalled.

If the student is unable to recall the assignment, you will need to grant an extension in order to reopen the assignment for editing. Please do not revoke the assignment from the student.
