Icon Festivals

Since 1990, ten annual icon festivals When East Meets West have been held at the Roman Catholic Basilica of Saint Mary in Minneapolis, usually during the month of November. The festivals typically include an icon exhibit, a lecture explaining the theology and spirituality of Eastern Christian art, a Sunday procession with the icons, a joint concert by the Cathedral Choirs of the Basilica of Saint Mary and Saint Mary's Orthodox Cathedral (Orthodox Church in America), and a joint Orthodox-Catholic Vespers.

Mrs. Debra Korluka, Orthodox Iconographer, has helped to organize the exhibit in the past and contributed numerous icons. Mrs. Korluka offers iconography classes in the Twin Cities and organizes trips to Russia and Ukraine.

Dr. Paul Gavrilyuk (UST) delivered lectures on "Theology of Icon" and "Mary in Eastern Orthodox Tradition" at the last two icon festivals in November 2003 and 2004.
