Faculty Summer Seminar 2007: Catholicism and Literature

June 11-15, 2007
Conducted by Joseph Pearce,
Associate Professor of Literature at Ave Maria University. 

The seminar will focus on the Catholic Literary Revival in England in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, exploring its roots, its manifestations and the huge impact it had on contemporary culture.  Joseph Pearce has written widely on this topic, including books on G. K. Chesterton, Hilaire Belloc, Oscar Wilde, C. S. Lewis, J. R. R. Tolkien and others.

The outline of topics will be roughly as follows:

DAY ONE:
The Catholic Literary Revival: A Panoramic Overview from 1790 to 1990

DAY TWO:
You Take the High Road and I’ll Take The Low Road: From Hopkins to Wilde

DAY THREE:
G.K. Chesterton: Wisdom and Innocence; and Hilaire Belloc: Bellicosity and Bombast

DAY FOUR:
T.S. Eliot: A Visitor’s Guide to the Waste Land

DAY FIVE:
The Key to Tolkien and Lewis: Unlocking Lewis’ (non)Catholicism & Unlocking The Lord of the Rings
