At the heart of the program is an interdisciplinary course of study, emphasizing theology, philosophy, history, literature and the arts, that offers students an opportunity to explore the origins and development of the diverse but distinctively Catholic imagination. The capstone “Master’s Essay,” written during the final semester of study, allows students to consider, in a wide variety of contexts and with a number of different methods, the prospects for and challenges to the expression of a Catholic imagination in contemporary thought and culture.
For some, a Master of Arts degree in Catholic Studies is a stepping-stone to doctoral (Ph.D.) work in the humanities. For others it provides the knowledge and skills for better integrating faith and work. For still others it is simply an opportunity to contemplate the beauty of the Catholic faith for its own sake.
