What Does it Mean to be a Disciple of Christ Today?

Orthodox-Catholic Dialogue in the Twin Cities received its impetus from the Catholic Archdiocesan Commission on Ecumenism and Interreligious Affairs primarily through the efforts of Dr. James Cunningham, Orthodox scholar and history professor at the College of St. Catherine. With cooperation from local Orthodox clergy, some of the major initiatives for greater understanding that transpired include:

1991

Fr. Simeon Johnson and Dr. James Cunningham work on institutionalizing Orthodox/ Eastern Church Studies at the University of St. Thomas and the College of St.Catherine. Fr. Simeon taught two courses per semester at St. Thomas and one at St. Catherine's.

Orthodox-Lutheran Dialogue took place at Luther-Northwestern Seminary and St. Mary's Greek Orthodox Church. Dr. Cunningham received an icon from the Minnesota Eastern Orthodox Clergy Association for "ecumenical activities."

June 1988

Sr. Mary Catherine Shambour of the University of St. Thomas organized an alumni Orthodox-Catholic study tour to the USSR ("And Behold We Live!") for the purpose of visiting Orthodox and Catholic churches in the country in honor of the Millenium of Christianity. Group visited St. Danilov Monastery in Moscow, the Troitse-Serieva Lavra in Sergiev Posad (Zagorsk), as well as Orthodox and Catholic churches in Moscow, Leningrad, Kiev, Vilnius, Volgograd, Tblisi, and Yerevan.

April 15-17, 1988

"Millennium of St. Vladimir Symposium" at the College of St. Catherine, featuring lectures, films, panel discussions, displays of sacred icons, and Orthodox Vespers concelebrated by Fr. Meyendorff with priests from the Metropolitan Area Orthodox Clergy Council with music by St. Mary's Orthodox Cathedral Choir, directed by Mary Ann Sporcic. Keynote speaker: Very Rev.  January 5-29, l988 

Dr. James Cunningham and Professor Bruce Wrightsman, Luther College through Seminars International led a study tour to the USSR to observe the Millennium, visiting churches in Leningrad, Kiev, Armenia, and Moscow. 

October 10-11, 1987

St. Mary's Orthodox Cathedral observed the 100th anniversary of its founding. Special guests included: His Beatitude Metropolitan Theodosius and Bishop Boris Geeze, Orthodox Bishop of Chicago and the Midwest who presided at Vespers Service and received Archbishop John Roach.

Fall 1987

Fr. Simeon Johnson, St. Herman's Orthodox Church in Spring Lake Park taught two courses at the College of St. Catherine: THEO 271: Introduction to Eastern Orthodoxy and THEO 299B: The Early Church: Theological and Spiritual Roots.

    • Professor John Baboukis, St. George Greek Orthodox Church, offered workshops in Byzantine chant.
    • A minor in Orthodox Studies was offered at the College of St. Catherine.
    • A month-long presentation of icons was held at the College of St. Catherine in commemoration of the Millennium of St. Vladimir.  
Fall 1986

Dr. James Cunningham taught "Eastern Orthodoxy: History and Culture" at the University of Minnesota.

May 24, 1986

Catholic-Orthodox Ecumenical Workshop for Catholic and Orthodox clergy and laity held at the Parish Center of St. Mary's Orthodox Cathedral in Minneapolis, sponsored by the Twin Cities Catholic-Orthodox Resource Committee. Keynote address: Fr. John Meyendorff, St. Vladimir's Seminary, "The Theotokos: Mary, Mother of God". Catholic response: Msgr. Jerome D. Quinn, St. Paul Seminary

January 21, 1986

Dinner and gathering of Orthodox and Roman Catholic clergy at St. Rose Parish Center in Roseville, organized by Rev. Fred Campbell and Rev. Simeon Johnson. Rev. Paul Jannakos, Saint Mary's Cathedral, spoke of the place of the Blessed Virgin Mary in Orthodox theology. Catholic response: Fr. Ted Campbell, followed by Question/Answer session and prayer service

September 26, 1985

Representatives from Orthodox and Catholic churches in Twin Cities met to plan future meetings of clergy and form the Twin Cities Catholic-Orthodox Resource Committee. Members include: Very Rev. John Khoury, St. George's Antiochian Church; Rev. Thaddeus Wojcik, St. Mary's Orthodox Church; Rev. Simeon Johnson, St. Herman's Orthodox Church; Dr. James Cunningham, College of St. Catherine; Rev. Orthodox-Catholic Ecumenical Workshop for persons serving as ecumenical liaisons or doing ecumenical work in parishes was held in connections with the Week of Prayer for Christian Unity at the College of St. Thomas. Featured speaker: Fr John Matusiak: "Perspectives on Ecumenism" Question/Answer Forum: Fr. Patrick Ryan and Fr. John Matusiak.
