According to many leaders of the Latino community in the United States, one of their most pressing needs is for dynamic programs and activities which will foster the development of future leaders from within the community. The Center for Catholic Studies at the University of St. Thomas offers scholarships to support prospective Latino leaders in order to advance the common good of the community.
The scholarship will entail three obligations for the students: 1) a double major at St. Thomas with one major (or, in some cases, a minor) in Catholic Studies, 2) participation in the life of Casa Guadalupana located on the West Side of St. Paul, and 3) a commitment to the Latino community upon completion of the undergraduate degree. The university will offer a renewable scholarship covering tuition costs for up to three courses each semester, according to financial needs, for a maximum period of four years providing the student maintain acceptable academic performance and meet the obligations noted.
Students will double major in Catholic Studies and one other field such as journalism, education, business, biology, pre-law, etc. While grounded in Catholic philosophy and theology, the Catholic Studies major engages students with the imaginative and sacramental expressions of Catholic life in literature, the arts, social systems and personal experience. The program’s interdisciplinary dimension gives students insight into the Church’s dynamic interaction with and interpenetration of cultures, traditions, and intellectual life throughout history. The double major serves as a way to better integrate students’ field of work with the community in which they reside and the faith which they profess. The double major will provide students with the intellectual resources to more effectively translate their role as leaders within the Latino, Catholic community.
Students who are awarded a leadership scholarship will be expected to participate in the life of their parish and in the life of the Casa Guadalupana by serving guests. As students move through their education at St. Thomas, Casa Guadalupana will enable them to serve the Latino community in concrete ways. Their experience at St. Thomas will not divorce or alienate them from their culture but will help them to understand in new and constructive ways as they study and serve. They will also serve as role models for other young people in their community.
