Advice from St. Thomas Alumni in the field

“I am a Physician Assistant.  I was a Biology and Spanish Double Major with a Chemistry Minor.  So I did have to go on to graduate school to get where I am, but my major led me that way I guess.  I was pre-med at St. Thomas.  I did not do well on the MCAT and decided to seek other possibilities for my career.  I worked odds and ends jobs for a couple years after UST and then decided to pursue PA school.”

“I completed a biology major at St. Thomas.  I am currently a nurse practitioner.  Even though I took a different route to becoming an NP, my biology degree was very beneficial.  The degree prepared me well and helped in my admittance to Case Western Reserve University's Nursing Doctorate program.”

“I feel that my biology degree provided me with an excellent base primarily within the context of anatomy/physiology/cell biology.  I was also able to opt out of several classes in my graduate program that I had previously taken at St. Thomas.”

“Look at all the possibilities out there and not have tunnel vision.  I probably would have been a PA sooner had I looked into it more while I was at UST.”

“Network and explore the options ahead of you. Find people in that field and ask them about their job and their advice. It never hurts to know what you are getting into ahead of time.”
