Frequently Asked Questions from Faculty and Staff

I am advising a student who is unclear and uncertain about his/her choice for a major. Does your office offer assistance for such students?

Yes. Many of the students we see are struggling with that question. Often assessments, such as the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator and the Strong Interest Inventory, are helpful to these students. Have the student call (651) 962-6761 to schedule a time to see a Career Specialist, and we will do our best to assist him or her in their decision making.

What information can I give students about career opportunities that will utilize their major?

The Academic Counseling Web site has a wonderful reference, "What can I do with a major in..." We also recommend the Post Graduation Survey Report which lists employment opportunities by major of recent graduates.

A student has asked me to provide a letter of reference. What should I include?

We recommend looking at Tips for Providing References from the National Association of Colleges and Employers Web site. It will provide you with legal principles, suggested guidelines, and samples.
