National Champion University of St. Thomas Dance Team

2008 National Champions!

 January 28, 2008

The University of St. Thomas Dance Team competed at the National College Cheerleading and Dance Team Championships in Orlando, Florida the weekend of January 19-20th. For the first time, they entered the championships in the top spot, having won the preliminary round where teams submit a videotaped routine for judging. Their routine put them in first place and won the team an all-expense paid bid to the championships.

In a highly competitive competition, UST brought home the title of 2008 national champions in the jazz category. This marks the Tommies second national title in three years. The dance team also competed in the hip-hop category and placed 2nd for the fourth year in a row.

The National College Cheerleading and Dance Team Championships is scheduled to air nationally on ESPN2 on Sunday, February 17th at 1 pm CST and Tuesday, February 26th at 2pm CST. The show will continue to air frequently throughout the year so check the local listings for more airdates.

Background
The purpose of the Tommie Dance Team is the promote school spirit at various athletic events, campus activities, and competitions. The dance team performs at all home football games, several mens and women's basketball games, and various campus events. Several local performances and competitions are also included such as the Spirit of America (Mall of America) and the National College Dance Team Championships (Orlando, FL).

Commitment
Being a part of the dance team requires a large time commitment, although dedication to academics always comes first. Team members must be full time students and maintain a reputable GPA throughout the season to remain academically eligible. Practices are three nights a week (Sunday 7:30pm-10:30pm, Monday 7-10pm, and Wednesday 7-10pm). In addition, dancers are also required to workout and condition on their own two to three times a week. -Team members have the option to begin practicing mid-July to prepare for UDA camp the first week in August. Regular season will begin with the start of the Fall Semester. -Additional practices are added over J-Term to prepare for nationals and usually require dancers to return to campus around January 28th. These practices are twice a day up until the date of departure for nationals. Please contact Coach Alysia Anderson at alysiamanderson@gmail.com for more information.
