In 2008, members of the Mathematics Department at the University of St. Thomas learned that the Computational Science Training for Undergraduates in the Mathematical Sciences (CSUMS) proposal they submitted to the National Science Foundation was funded.

The project entails the formulation of undergraduate research cohorts that spend one year in an intensive research program to learn how computation is used in applied mathematical research. The faculty group consists of 13 faculty members from the University of St. Thomas, Augsburg College, and Macalester College.

Since 2008 the Mathematics Department has offered intensive seminars on computational methods to cohort students. Professors Stolarska and Van Fleet led these seminars.
