Center for Ethical Business Cultures Hosts 3rd Annual Business Ethics Case Competition

On March 4, the Third Annual CEBC Ethics Case Competition - focused on “Microfinance: Ethical Advice to Interested Parties” - was hosted by the Center for Ethical Business Cultures (CEBC), the University of St. Thomas Opus College of Business and UnitedHealth Group.
The competition provided three teams of graduate students in the Full-time UST MBA program an opportunity to compete and be evaluated on their ability analyze a complex business issue, uncover the legal and ethical challenges associated with the topic and develop a policy recommendation.
This year's winning team was comprised of second-year student Kelsey Luers and first-year students Sara Christenson, Nick Ertz and Dan Jackson.
In addition, the judges selected a team of “all stars” who will represent UST at the national Intercollegiate Business Ethics Case Competition (IBECC) being held in conjunction with the 19th Annual Ethics and Compliance Officer Association (ECOA) Conference in Seattle, WA.
The all star team members are second-year student Kelsey Luers and first-year students Annelise Larson, Dan Jackson and Kristian Olson. JD/MBA student Scott Buell was selected as the alternate for the all star team.
This collaboration between CEBC, the University of St. Thomas and UnitedHealth Group provided judges with the opportunity to connect with outstanding UST MBA students and learn more about the program. For students, the competition provided an opportunity to engage and learn from Twin Cities business executives and faculty ethics experts.
The judging panel consisted of
- Jim Chosy, JD, general counsel and managing director, Piper Jaffray
- Rob Foehl, JD, director of Corporate Compliance and Ethics, Target
- Dr. Ken Goodpaster, Koch Endowed Chair in Business Ethics, Opus College of Business
- Ron James, president and CEO of the Center for Ethical Business Cultures
- Jeff Peterson, director of Innovation and Strategy, General Mills Foundation.
In addition, Jim Arnold, professor in the Full-time UST MBA and MS Accountancy programs at the University of St. Thomas Opus College of Business, served as communications expert.
